Izu Oshima is an island rich in geological and biological diversity, but its ecosystem is being threatened by invasive species. I conducted research on cutting down and utilizing the invasive species “kamiyasude,” which grows throughout the island. Kamiyasude is a large plant native to Taiwan and southern China and has the potential to negatively impact the ecosystem.
After cutting it down, I discovered that the bark of kamiyasude can be tanned with glycerin, and the stem can be used for furniture and other purposes. I believe that this process allows us to effectively utilize the invasive species, creating a cycle between people and materials, which could contribute to the improvement of the island’s ecosystem.
